It really wasn't the best night to be Harry Styles at the MTV Video Music Awards at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. First, the One Direction hunk, 19, appeared to be heckled by none other other than ex-girlfriendTaylor Swift as he and his bandmates presented an award (Swift was seen mouthing the words "Shut the f--- up!" to BFF Selena Gomez). Then, when Styles and his mates Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson won the Moonman for Best Song of the Summer (for their track "Best Song Ever"), the British quintet were greeted with unmistakable boos in the audience.
Why was the boy band booed? Many presume that non-1D fans were upset that the viewer-voted award went to the wrong musical act, with nominated, much more ubiquitous summertmes tracks likeDaft Punk's "Get Lucky" and Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" getting overlooked.
One person who wasn't booing: Lady Gaga. The "Applause" singer, 27, was caught in the VIP observing the melee and looked obviously upset. Greeting the boys backstage, Gaga (wearing a shell bikini) ranted: "I want to leave right now, . . . I don't want to stay anymore because I don't want to be in a room where people are booing."
Comforting the 1D guys -- who seemed to take the booing in stride -- Gaga said: "I just want to tell you that you deserve every bit of success that you have."
