Taylor Swift Brings Out Tegan and Sara in L.A.

Taylor Swift is making new friends on her Red tour this summer. Last night in Los Angeles she brought out Tegan and Sara as surprise guests to perform their bouncy, affectionate hit "Closer." As she introduced the sister duo, Swift called their new album, Heartthrob, "one of my favorites of all time. If you've ever had your heart broken, you need to have their album."
The Calgary twins arrived midway through Swift's two-hour concert, rising from the Staples Center stage dressed in black and wearing stylish combat boots. Tegan sang first, twisting in place to the heartsick dance hooks: "All I want to know is, can you come a little closer?"
The trio worked their way down the catwalk, with Swift in a gleaming white T-shirt reading "Hello Los Angeles." Their voices blended easily on the pop tune. "I notice we have a bouncy crowd," Swift said, encouraging fans to hop along to the message: "Let's make things physical . . . I want you."
It was the second of Swift's four sold-out nights at the arena. The multi-platinum host has been inviting guests onstage each night: Cher Lloyd and Sara Bareilles joined her the night before, and on Tuesday she also sang a duet with red-headed opener Ed Sheeran ("Everything Has Changed").
For longtime fans of Tegan and Sara, who began recording as a young indie rock duo with a gift for lovesick melodies, their collaboration with a pop crossover artist like Swift might seem surprising. But Heartthrob showed the singer-songwriters evolving into searing, danceable electro-pop. In recent interviews, both acts have made admiring comments about each other's music.
The rest of the night was just as excitable, unfolding a hit parade that sent Swift soaring through the air, strolling down a long catwalk with supermodel swagger and delivering "You Belong With Me" with a quartet of backing singers and dance moves resembling a Sixties girl group.
Like Pink and other agile pop contemporaries this year, Swift's concert was musical theatre on an epic scale, down to the color-coordinated sparkly red microphone, ruby slippers and a matching electric guitar. Swift switched to period costume for "Lucky One," wrapped in a snug red Jessica Rabbit gown and trailed by dancers dressed as 1950s newsmen and photographers in fedoras.
There were home movies of baby Taylor, following her rise from Nashville teen to Grammy-winning sensation, and songs on the struggles of growing up, including "Mean" and "15." The latter, about her freshman year of high school, was one of several songs that began with Swift alone on guitar or banjo.
"I didn't always have 15,000 people waiting to hang out with me on a Tuesday night. It's wild," Swift said to her ocean of fans (dominated by young girls and their parents), who lifted heart-shaped signs and words made of lights spelling out song titles and lyrics.
Swift thanked them repeatedly during the night, through multiple costume changes and songs of pure pop and twangy self-determination. The momentum never slowed, even during her many, many remarks on a long line of worthless ex-boyfriends. (You know who you are.)

Jack the Ripper

Jack the Ripper
Jacktheripper3-1
Traditionally, Jack the Ripper is considered to have killed five women, all London prostitutes, during 1888. The Ripper generally killed by strangling his victims, then laying them down and cutting the arteries in their throats; this was followed by a varied process of mutilation, during which parts of the body were removed and kept. During the autumn and winter of 1888/89 a number of letters circulated among the police and newspapers, all claiming to be from the Whitechapel murderer; these include the ‘From Hell’ letter and one accompanied by part of a kidney. Ripperologists consider most, if not all, of the letters to be hoaxes. Over a century later Jack’s identity has never been wholly proven (there isn’t even a leading suspect), most aspects of the case are still debated and the Ripper is an infamous cultural bogeyman.

MURDER UNSOLVED

The Zodiac
Zodiac-Killer-1-1
The Zodiac Killer is one of the great unsolved serial killer mysteries of all time, taking only second place to Jack the Ripper. Even though police investigated over 2,500 potential suspects, the case was never officially solved. There were a few suspects that stood out, but the forensic technology of the times was not advanced enough to nail any one of them conclusively. The Zodiac murdered five known victims in Benicia, Vallejo, Lake Berryessa, and San Francisco between December 1968 and October 1969. Four men and three women between the ages of 16 and 29 were targeted. Others have also been suspected to be Zodiac victims, but there has been thus far no conclusive evidence to link them to the killer

Andrew and Abby Borden
Andrew Borden
On a Thursday morning, August 4, 1892, Andrew Borden left home to conduct his business, leaving in the house, besides his wife, an Irish maid (Bridget Sullivan) and his daughter Lizzie. On his return, he settled on a sofa for a nap. About 11:15 AM, Lizzie (according to her testimony) discovered her father dead, repeatedly struck in the head with a sharp instrument. Upstairs his wife’s body was found, even more brutally mutilated; examination proved that her death had preceded her husband’s by an hour or so. It was found that Lizzie had tried to purchase prussic acid (a poison) on August 3, and a few days later she was alleged to have burned a dress in a stove. Sullivan, who also has been suspected, later that evening reportedly left the house carrying an unexamined parcel. No weapon was found, though an axe found in the basement was suspected. Lizzie was arrested and tried for both murders in June 1893 but was acquitted, given the circumstantial evidence. She was nonetheless ostracized thereafter by the people of her native Fall River, Massachusetts, where she continued to live until her death in 1927.

murder

Black Dahlia
Short
Elizabeth Short (born 29 July 1924) was a 22-year-old American woman who was the victim of a gruesome and much-publicized murder. Nicknamed the Black Dahlia, Short was found cut in half and severely mutilated on 15 January 1947 in Leimert Park, Los Angeles. The murder, which has remained unsolved, has been the source of widespread speculation as well as several books and film adaptations. Sensational and sometimes inaccurate press coverage, as well as the horrible nature of the crime, focused intense public attention on the case. About 60 people confessed to the murder, mostly men, as well as a few women. As the case continues to command public attention, many more people have been proposed as Short’s killer, much like London’s Jack the Ripper murders of 1888.

SMALL KID MURDER

JonBenét Ramsay
Jonbenet Ramsey-783770
JonBenet Ramsays was a six-year-old girl known for her participation in beauty pageants in the United States. She was found murdered in the basement of her parents’ home in Boulder, Colorado, nearly eight hours after she was reported missing. The case is notable in both its longevity and the media interest it has generated in the United States. After several grand jury hearings the case is still unsolved. In December 2003, forensic investigators extracted enough material from a mixed blood sample found on JonBenét’s underwear to establish a DNA profile. The DNA belongs to an unknown Caucasian male. The DNA was submitted to the FBI’s Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), a database containing more than 1.6 million DNA profiles, mainly from convicted felons. The sample has yet to find a match in the database, although it continues to be checked for partial matches on a weekly basis.

MURDER UNSOLVED

The Axeman of New Orleans
1196750-French Quarter New Orleans-New Orleans
On May 23, 1918, an Italian grocer named Joseph Maggio and his wife were butchered while sleeping in their apartment above the Maggio grocery store. Upon investigation, the police discovered that a panel in the rear door had been chiseled out, providing a way in for the killer. The murder weapon, an axe, was found in the apartment, still coated with the Maggio’s blood. Nothing in the house had been stolen, including jewelry and money that were nearly in plain sight. The only clue that was discovered was a message that had been written in chalk near the victim’s home. It read: “Mrs. Joseph Maggio will sit up tonight. Just write Mrs. Toney”. Almost exactly a month after the Maggio murder came a second crime. Louis Bossumer, a grocer who lived behind his store with his common-law wife, Annie Harriet Lowe, was discovered by neighbors one morning, lying in a pool of blood. The Axeman murdered a total of eight people before the killings stopped. There was no evidence to link the only suspect, Joseph Mumfre, to the crimes.

UNSOLVED

Jack the Stripper
Hammersmith-Bridge
Jack the Stripper was the nickname given to an unknown serial killer responsible for what came to be known as the London “nude murders” between 1964 and 1965. His victimology was similar to Jack the Ripper’s. He murdered six — possibly eight — prostitutes, whose nude bodies were discovered around London or dumped in the River Thames. The victim count is ambiguous because two of the murders attributed to him did not fit his modus operandi. Like the Jack the Ripper killings, the Stripper’s reign of terror seemed to cease on its own, and there were few solid clues for police to investigate. Though his identity remains unknown, crime writer Donald Rumbelow notes that the killer could have been a young man who committed suicide in south London. This main suspect, who was also a favorite suspect of Chief Superintendent Du Rose, was a security guard on the Heron Trading Estate in Acton whose rounds included a paint shop where one of the bodies was thought to have been hidden after the crime. Though there was never any hard evidence to link him to the crimes, his family found his suicide inexplicable, and his suicide note cryptically said only that he was “unable to take the strain any longer”.

crazy murder

The Boy in the Box
Boxboy
In 1957, an unidentified Caucasian male, probable age 4 to 6 years, whose nude body, wrapped in a cheap flannel blanket, was found lying face up inside a large cardboard carton just a few feet from the edge of Susquehanna Road in Northeast Philadelphia. The body was dry and clean. The boy’s arms were carefully folded across his stomach. The finger and toenails had been recently trimmed short and neat. His hair had been cut recently – very close to the head, in a crude, hurried way, perhaps as a deliberate attempt to conceal the child’s identity. Small clumps of cut hair clung to his entire body, suggesting that someone had groomed him while he was unclothed, probably either shortly before or immediately after death. There were many bruises all over the child’s body; particularly on the head and face. All of the bruises appeared to have been inflicted at the same time. Despite recent DNA investigations in to the crime, it remains unsolved.

killing

Olof Palme
Olof Palme
Palme was a Swedish politician and prime minister (1982 – 1986). The nuclear accident in 1979 at Three Mile Island in the United States had a great impact in Sweden, and Palme contributed to a referendum (passed in 1980) to remove all nuclear reactors in Sweden. After being elected prime minister again in 1982, Palme tried to reinstate socialist economic policies in Sweden, and he continued to be outspoken on matters of European security. He was shot and killed while walking home with his wife after a visit to a cinema. The motive and identity of the killer remain a mystery.

Murders

Every year a large number of murders go unsolved, but some gain such infamy that they remain in the public mind for many years to come. This is a list of the ten most famous murders in modern history. The one rule I had for this list was that there had be a body – this excludes people like Jimmy Hoffa.

Oscar Romero
Oscar Romero
Oscar Romero was a prominent Roman Catholic priest and Archbishop in El Salvador during the 1960s and 1970s. After witnessing numerous violations of human rights, he began to speak out on behalf of the poor and the victims of El Salvador’s long and bloody civil war. After speaking out against U.S. military support for the government of El Salvador, and calling for soldiers to disobey orders that harmed human rights, Archbishop Romero was shot to death while celebrating Mass at a small chapel near his cathedral. It is believed that his assassins were members of Salvadoran death squads, including two graduates of the School of the Americas.

U.S. allows states to legalize recreational marijuana within limits

A man lights his pipe at the 4/20 pro-marijuana rally in Civic Center Park in downtown Denver April 20, …
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In a move marijuana advocates hailed as a historic shift, the Obama administration on Thursday began giving U.S. states wide leeway to experiment with pot legalization and started by letting Colorado and Washington carry out new laws permitting recreational use.
The Justice Department said it would refocus marijuana enforcement nationwide by bringing criminal charges only in eight defined areas - such as distribution to minors - and giving breathing room to users, growers and related businesses that have feared prosecution.
The decisions end nearly a year of deliberation inside President Barack Obama's administration about how to react to the growing movement for relaxed U.S. marijuana laws.
Advocates for legalization welcomed the announcement as a major step toward ending what they called "marijuana prohibition."
"Today's announcement demonstrates the sort of political vision and foresight from the White House we've been seeking for a long time," said Ethan Nadelmann, executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance, an advocacy group.
"I must admit, I was expecting a yellow light from the White House," he said in a statement. "But this light looks a lot more green-ish than I had hoped. The White House is basically saying to Washington and Colorado: Proceed with caution."
Marijuana remains illegal and tightly controlled under federal law, even as about 20 states, plus the District of Columbia, allow the use of medical marijuana. Voters in Colorado and Washington legalized recreational use in groundbreaking ballot measures in November 2012.
Obama had signaled he did not want a new crackdown, telling ABC News in December: "It does not make sense, from a prioritization point of view, for us to focus on recreational drug users in a state that has already said that's legal."
The leeway for the states will go only so far, though, if Colorado, Washington or other states show they are unable to control the drug, the Justice Department said in a statement.
Forty-two percent of Americans age 12 or older have used marijuana at some point, according to a 2011 survey by the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Obama has said he used marijuana when he was young.
One opponent of marijuana legalization said his group would redouble efforts to spread word of the negative effects the drug can have on adolescents.
"This is going to really quicken the realization among folks that more marijuana in our communities is not a good thing," said Kevin Sabet, a co-founder of Smart Approaches to Marijuana.
EIGHT AREAS IN FOCUS
The Justice Department could have sued to block the Colorado and Washington laws from taking effect under the theory that they conflict with the Controlled Substances Act of 1970, the primary U.S. anti-drug law.
Coupled with the decision not to sue, the Justice Department sent a four-page memorandum to federal prosecutors nationwide outlining eight priority areas for marijuana enforcement.
While department officials said they are committed to enforcing federal restrictions on marijuana, prosecutors have now been told not to expend effort on cases unless they fall in one of the eight areas.
The areas include distribution to minors, situations when marijuana revenue is going to other criminal enterprises, trafficking across state lines and growing on public land.
The criteria mean, for example, that federal prosecutors will not charge a marijuana dispensary simply because it is large or profitable, said a Justice Department official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
But the criteria also stop short of guaranteeing immunity for anyone, leaving business and individuals open to prosecution if the case fits one of the eight areas, the official said.
Colorado and Washington will need to have regulatory systems to protect against those types of crimes, or else risk giving up the whole experiment, the department said in a statement.
Attorney General Eric Holder had a phone call on Thursday with the governors of Colorado and Washington to inform them of the decisions and told them there would be a "trust but verify" relationship between the Justice Department and the states, said the department official.
State officials said they shared Holder's concerns.
"This reflects a balanced approach by the federal government that respects the states' interests in implementing these laws and recognizes the federal government's role in fighting illegal drugs and criminal activity," Washington Governor Jay Inslee and Attorney General Bob Ferguson, both of whom are Democrats, said in a statement.

...........maybe I am too young. Boy, how could I ever, ever be so dumb." With all of her might, she pushed Dan away: "Please take me home, I don't want to stay." Dan cranked up the engine and floored the gas. In a matter of seconds they were going too fast. As Dan drove on in a fit of wild anger, Jenny knew that her life was in danger. She begged and pleaded for him to slow down, But he just got faster as they neared the town. "Just let me get home! I'll confess that I lied. I really went out for a moonlight ride." Then all of a sudden, she saw a big flash. "Oh God, Please help us! We're going to crash!" She doesn't remember the force of impact. Just that everything all of a sudden went black. She felt someone remove her from the twisted rubble, And heard, "call an ambulance! These kids are in trouble! Voices she heard...a few words at best. But she knew there were two cars involved in the wreck. Then wondered to herself if Dan was all right, And if the people in the other car was alive. She awoke in the hospital to faces so sad. "You've been in a wreck and it looks pretty bad." These voices echoed inside her head, As they gently told her that Dan was dead. They said "Jenny, we've done all we can do. But it looks as if we'll lose you too." "But the people in the other car!?" Jenny cried. "We're sorry, Jenny, they also died." Jenny prayed, "God, forgive me for what I've done I only wanted to have just one night of fun." "Tell those people's family, I've made their lives dim, And wish I could return their families to them." "Tell Mom and Dad I'm sorry I lied, And that it's my fault so many have died. Oh, nurse, won't you please tell them that for me?" The nurse just stood there-she never agreed. But took Jenny's hand with tears in her eyes. And a few moments later Jenny died. A man asked the nurse, "Why didn't you do your best To bid that girl her one last request?" She looked at the man with eyes so sad. "Because the people in the other car were her mom and dad." This story is sad and unpleasant but true, So young people take heed, it could have been you.

sad story

Jenny was so happy about the house they had found. For once in her life 'twas on the right side of town. She unpacked her things with such great ease. As she watched her new curtains blow in the breeze. How wonderful it was to have her own room. School would be starting; she'd have friends over soon. There'd be sleep-overs, and parties; she was so happy It's just the way she wanted her life to be. On the first day of school, everything went great. She made new friends and even got a date! She thought, "I want to be popular and I'm going to be, Because I just got a date with the star of the team!" To be known in this school you had to have clout, And dating this guy would sure help her out. There was only one problem stopping her fate. Her parents had said she was too young to date. "Well I just won't tell them the entire truth. They won't know the difference; what's there to lose?" Jenny asked to stay with her friends that night. Her parents frowned but said, "All right." Excited, she got ready for the big event But as she rushed around like she had no sense, She began to feel guilty about all the lies, But what's a pizza, a party, and a moonlight ride? Well the pizza was good, and the party was great, But the moonlight ride would have to wait. For Dan was half drunk by this time. But he kissed her and said that he was just fine. Then the room filled with smoked and Dan took a puff. Jenny couldn't believe he was smoking that stuff. Now Dan was ready to ride to the point But only after he'd smoked another joint. They jumped in the car for the moonlight ride, Not thinking that he was too drunk to drive. They finally made it to the point at last, And Dan started trying to make a pass. A pass is not what Jenny wanted at all (and by a pass, I don't mean playing football.) "Perhaps my parents were right....

'Why is it dark?' asks blinded Chinese boy

A boy lies with his eyes covered with bandages in a hospital in Taiyuan, north China's Shanxi province on August 27

A six-year-old Chinese boy who had his eyes gouged out does not know he has been blinded and asks his family why the sun has yet to rise, state media reported Wednesday.
The boy, surnamed Guo, was found covered in blood in the northern province of Shanxi after he went missing while playing outside, Chinese media reported previously.
His eyes, gouged out by an attacker, were recovered nearby, a police officer in Fenxi county who declined to be named told AFP.
The boy was being treated at an eye hospital and was not yet aware that he has been left blind for life, the Beijing Youth Daily said.
"He asks why the sky is always dark... and why the dawn still hasn't come," it quoted an uncle of the boy as saying.
"We could only tell him that his eyes had some injury and have to be bandaged. (We tell him that) they will be fine after the bandage is removed.
"It is such a difficult question to explain to him. It is the most heartbreaking thing," he said.
Earlier Chinese media reports said the corneas were missing when the boy's eyes were found, leading to speculation that the attacker was an organ trafficker.
But police said Wednesday the corneas had been found attached to the eyeballs and ruled out organ sales as a motive, although they were unable to provide an alternative explanation for the attack.
"We are still working on it so we cannot offer any comment or make any assumption on the motives," the Fenxi officer said.
Police offered a 100,000 yuan ($16,000) reward for information leading to the arrest of the sole suspect, who they said was a woman. Reports said she drugged the boy before gouging out his eyeballs.
No-one had been detained by late Wednesday afternoon, domestic media said.
A video posted online Tuesday showed the boy -- who had a cleft palate -- writhing in agony on a hospital bed. Pictures posted online Wednesday showed him still heavily bandaged, apparently in less acute pain.
The brutal attack has shocked Internet users in China, who offered sympathy for the boy and demanded retribution against his attacker on the country's hugely popular microblogs.
His plight was the most searched news story on Sina Weibo, China's version of Twitter, on Wednesday.
"This poor child, he must be suffering more than if he was dead and he has to live in darkness forever," said one poster. "We have to capture the criminal!"
Another wrote: "This is so cruel. I hope we can quickly capture the suspect and bring justice back! She is worse than a monster."
Doctors plan to implant artificial eyeballs in the boy's eye sockets after his inflammation subsides so that people will not be scared by his appearance in future, his uncle said according to media reports.

10 Things You Should Never Say About Your Ex

For your own sake, don't say these things about him post-breakup.For your own sake, don't say these things about him post-breakup.Obviously, when you end things with your a-hole, jerky ex, all you wanna do is talk about what a jerky a-hole he is. But before you launch into a tirade about his emotional unavailability, check out these expert tips on the etiquette of what not to say after your relationship is dunzo-at least for your own sake.

By Natasha Burton

1. He was broke.
Everyone has a different lifestyle and just because he couldn't match yours, that doesn't mean he's a bad guy-or even cheap. Don't sound high maintenance by complaining about his lack of funds.

2. Everything he thought/did/said was terrible.
Even though you broke up, you shouldn't systematically annihilate of every good thing he did or every good time you had. If someone brings up a great memory of the two of you, take a deep breath and avoid the urge to say, "Yeah, but what about the time he did [insert something horrible here]." And definitely don't badmouth your ex to the max in front of your new man. If your current BF thinks you may still have strong-even strongly negative-feelings for your past guy, he may wonder if you've actually moved on.

Related: 10 Things Every Womans Must Do To Move On From Her Ex
3. He was always a jerk.
Well, then why did you date him for X number of months or even years? Saying this just makes you look bad, and worse, bitter. Sure, it's always important to look back and see if there were any red flags you missed-so you can be well aware of what to look for next time-but you don't need to broadcast all the warning signs to everyone you know.

4. You still love him.
We all go through heartache and have experienced a breakup. Telling anyone that you still love him will only prolong the healing. Fake it till you make it. Reframe this to something like, "We had a good run, and I wish him the best." Even if you don't.

5. Anything super embarrassing about your ex.
If you're willing to share awful story after awful story about your ex, what does this say to your pals or your current man?

Related: 8 Things All Guys Are Secretly Insecure About

6. Anything he told you in absolute confidence.
In that same vein, don't show you're untrustworthy by spilling major secrets about your ex's family, childhood, what have you. However bitterly things ended, the fact is that you were in an intimaterelationship with this person. Often, because he's an "ex" you may rationalize that any oaths made are off the table but keeping promises and living with integrity is just a good way to lead your life.

7. Qualities that you loved about your ex.
Some people have the opposite problem when it comes to exes and find themselves gushing about the awesome things he did, gifts he gave you, how he made you feel special, blah blah blah. For the sake of any new relationship you might be forming, and your own sanity, get your mind-and mouth-out of the past.

8. How much your parents loved him.
When you take a new guy to meet your folks, don't prime him by comparing how your exes fared with your family-especially if your mom and dad loved someone you previously dated. The guy is probably nervous enough trying to live up to your (and their) expectations-he doesn't need the ghost of your ex-bf taunting him, too.

9. The sex was bad.
Unless your man just lay there like a dead fish every time you got busy, how good he was in bed is completely subjective. (Russell Brand could have certainly used this advice when he blasted his sex life with ex Katy Perry this week-bad form, brah.)

10. Negative qualities your ex had that your current guy has.
If you really want to piss your current boyfriend off, mention that something he does that you totally hate reminds you of your ex. This kind of comment never leads to anything positive, trust us.

Justin Timberlake Defends Miley Cyrus, Offers '20/20' Details
Justin Timberlake yesterday stopped by New York radio station Hot 97, where he defended Miley Cyrus' controversial performance at MTV's Video Music Awards and talked about working with Jay Z and Drake on the second half of his 20/20 Experience project.
In an extensive chat with host Angie Martinez, Timberlake said receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the VMAs, where he also briefly reunited with 'NSync, was a huge honor. "To even be mentioned in the shadow of the G.O.A.T. [Greatest of All Time], to even be mentioned in the shadow of M.J., you feel like, whoa. It's humbling. It feels sacred in a way," Timberlake said.
When Martinez asked what he thought of Cyrus' energetic twerking, Timberlake said, "She's young, take it easy on her," and said it's worth considering the context of the performance. "It's the VMAs. You know what I mean, like, it's not the Grammys," he said. "We're talking about Madonna in a wedding dress humping the stage, we're talking about Britneydoing a striptease. This cycle is not uncommon."
Later, Timberlake added, "If something like that doesn't happen at the VMAs, I feel like it was boring."
With The 20/20 Experience: 2 of 2 due out September 30th, Timberlake talked about how songs for the two albums came together, and described lining up guest contributions. For "Murder," featuring Jay Z, Timberlake said the song happened during a three-week period that also resulted in his "Suit & Tie" and Jay Z's songs "Holy Grail" and "BBC."
"All of these songs were recorded together a year ago. So the song that Jay's on on the second half, it was a song I had done, and I was like, put an extra 16 bars on there, because I know Hov would like – I just heard him on it," Timberlake said.
His collaboration with Drake, "Caberet," was the result of mutual admiration. "The Drake thing was a song that was sitting around, and I just heard him on it," Timberlake said. "And Drake and I were trying to get at each other about doing a record, and I think we'll probably end up doing more as time goes by as well. The guy sings, raps, whatever. . . . He killed it."

Madonna is the Top-Earning Celebrity of 2013

By Dorothy Pomerantz, Forbes Staff
Madonna's latest album, "MDNA", was a flop. Her 12th studio album, Madonna sold fewer than 1 million copies of "MDNA" and the singles, like "Give Me All Your Luvin," failed to impress on the pop music scene.
But the tour that the Material Girl launched to go along with her new album was a spectacular success. Fans didn't flock to stadium and spend upwards of $100 per ticket to hear Madonna's latest stuff. They went to hear hits like "Vogue," "Like a Virgin" and "Lucky Star." The tour grossed $305 million and earned her the Top Touring Award at the Billboard Music Awards. Add to that strong merchandise sales, a clothing line, fragrance and investments in companies like Vita Coco and Madonna tops our list of the Highest Earning Celebrities. We estimate the pop star brought in $125 million between June 2012 and June 2013.
That's more money than Madonna has ever earned in the time we've been doing our Celebrity 100 list. The closest she came to $125 million was in 2009 when she earned $110 million.
Madonna's success, at age 55, just goes to show the incredible power of a successful music career. Many have accused Lady Gaga of copying Madonna's career. The young star is certainly emulating Madonna when it comes to raking in money. Gaga ranks 10th on our list of highest-paid celebrities with $80 million in earnings. She would have brought in even more than that if her tour hadn't been cut short by a hip injury. Her latest single, "Applause," was overshadowed last week by Katy Perry's latest, "Roar." But Gaga can comfort herself with the knowledge that last year at least, she earned a lot more money than Perry who brought in an estimated $39 million.
To compile our list, we talked to agents, managers, producers and other in-the-know folks to come up with estimates for each celebrity's entertainment-related earnings between June 2012 and June 2013, the time frame for our Celebrity 100 list. We do not deduct for taxes, agent fees or the other expenses of being a celebrity.
Ranking second on our list with $25 million less than Madonna is Steven Spielberg. The director earned an estimated $100 million between June 2011 and June 2012. Most of that money comes from his extensive library. Hit movies like "E.T." and "Jurassic Park" are always playing on TV somewhere in the world. Last year's "Lincoln" was a critical and financial hit earning $275 million on a budget of $65 million. Now Spielberg's DreamWorks is starting to show some real strength on TV. The studio's latest show, "Under the Dome," is one of the few bright spots on broadcast television.
Author E.L. James, Howard Stern and Simon Cowell all tie for third place on our list with $95 million each. James took the publishing world by storm with "50 Shades of Grey." The trilogy has sold 70 million copies worldwide and a movie is now in the works at Universal Studios. Stern still earns big from his contract with Sirius/XM (despite lawsuits) and Cowell is raking it in from the "The X Factor" and "Got Talent" formats which air in dozens of different countries. Stern and Cowell overlap with "Got Talent." Stern is earning an estimated $15 million per year as one of the judges on "America's Got Talent."

Watch: Ariana Grande and Austin Mahone Perform at 2013 VMAs Pre-Show

Before the main course, a couple of starters were served at the red carpet of the Barclays Center for the Pre-Show of the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, August 25th. US rising pop talents Ariana Grande and Austin Mahone performed their latest singles to entertain the live crowd and MTV viewers around the world who were waiting for the main show to kick off outside the Brooklyn venue. Watch their performances below!
Looking a fairytale princess, Ariana Grande performed a two-song setlist that featured her latest single, "Baby I", and smash hit "The Way", both cuts from her upcoming debut album "Yours Truly", due in stores September 3. As for Austin Mahone, the 17-year-old singer showed how when we're teenagers we sometimes don't make the best outfit choices, as he took the red carpet in a horrendous leathery ensemble, and wearing an unnecesary beanie, to perform his RedOne-produced song, "What About Love". How did he fare?. It was okay. It was more about dancing than singing, though. By the way, I applaud Austin's label's effort for promoting him like they're doing. Republic knows that in a few years he might be the 'next big thing'. VMAs pre-show was a major gig!
